Dzulkifli Abdul Razak joined Universiti Sains Malaysia,
(USM) as an academic staff in 1980. He has served as:
• Deputy Dean
in the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences from 1988 – 1994,
• Founder and Director of the
National Poison Centre, 1994-2000
• At the same time, he was appointed
as the Head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating
Centre on Drug Information beginning 1998.
In December 2000, he was made the Vice-Chancellor
of USM.
Dzulkifli is also currently:

• Chairman, Vice Chancellors/Rector Committee, Malaysia

Dzulkifli also act as a Consultant to WHO/HQ (Geneva)
and Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO). On behalf of WHO, he
led and conducted more than 10 missions to a number countries, in

Professor
Geoffrey A. Cordell

Obtained his Ph.D. in synthetic Organic Chemistry at the University
of Manchester in 1970. Following two years as a NATO postdoctoral
fellow at the Department of Chemistry, M.I.T. he joined the College
of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago.A Professor since
1980, he was an Associate Dean for Research in the College of
Pharmacy, and the Graduate College, an Assistant Vice Chancellor
for Research responsible for campus grants to faculty and for
human and animal subject research, and was the first Chair of
the Animal Care Committee at UIC. From 1988-1999 he served as
Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy,
and from 1992-1994 served as Interim Dean of the College of Pharmacy.
He is the author of more than 500 research publications, book
chapters, and comprehensive reviews, and a major book on alkaloids.
He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of thirteen scientific
journals.
His research is focused developing new technologies for the detection
and discovery of biologically active natural products. Chemistry
and biology of alkaloids. Use of plants as chemical reagents.
Analysis of phytotherapeutical agents. The future role of plants
in global health care.
Specific projects include:
a. Studies on the indigenously used oral medications for pain
and xerostomia by practicing dentists in Costa Rica and Colombia.
b. Studies on the global distribution of analgesic agents used
in oral medicine.
c. Methods for the detection of chemical and biological agents.

Iklas Khan
Position: Assistant Director

Dr. Ikhlas Khan is the Director of the FDA Program, a Research
Professor, as well as Professor in the Department of Pharmacognosy
at the National Center for Natural Products Research at the University
of Mississippi. He received a B.S. in Chemistry in 1980 and a
M.S. in Organic Chemistry in 1982 from the Aligarh Muslim University
in Aligarh, India. Dr. Khan then received a Ph.D. in Pharmacy
from the Institute fuer Pharmaceutische Biology in Munich, West
Germany in 1987 and postdoctoral studies at Swiss Federal Institute
of Technology (ETH) Zurich. After completing his education, Dr.
Khan began his career with the University of Mississippi in 1992
as a research scientist. He became a research assistant professor
in 1995, and was promoted to research associate professor and
director of the FDA program in 2001, assistant director of the
center in Oct. 2002 and to professor in July 2005.
Dr. Khan’s primary research interests include analytical
fingerprinting for standardization of herbal products, and bio-analytical
approaches to improvement of product quality and safety.
Dr. Khan has authored or co-authored over 225 original research
articles, publications, or reviews. He has been an invited speaker
at numerous events. Dr. Khan serves as reviewer for several journals.
Co-editor of planta medica and foreign editor for J. Traditional
Chinese medicine.
Dr. Khan is a fellow with the American Institute of Chemists
and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, of the American
Herbal Product Association in Washington D.C. He is member of
expert panel of United States of Pharmacopoeia (USP) Committee.
He is serving on the Advisory board of William L. Brown Center
for Plant Genetic Resources, Missouri Botanical Garden. He is
a member of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, and Rho
Chi, the Pharmaceutical Honor Society. Dr. Khan is also an active
member of the American Chemical Society, the Society of Medicinal
Plant Research, the American Association for the Advancement of
Sciences, and the New York Academy of Sciences. He is a member
of the American Society of Pharmacognosy , where he served as
Chair of the Constitution of By-laws Committee in 1998. He is
serving on Health Canda, NIH, AOAC expert committees. Dr. Khan
served as WHO consultant in Vietnam in 2002.

Dr Gruenwald is the Chief Scientific Officer of Biotropics Malaysia
Berhad founded early 2008. As an experienced medical scientist,
he also holds a doctorate in Botany and was a Scientific Director
and Head of Clinical Research of a prominent phyto-pharmaceutical
company based in Berlin, Germany. He was responsible for more
than 100 clinical and pharmacological studies on phyto-pharmaceuticals
and dietary supplements in Europe, the United States, Australia
and Asian. He is the author of the international reference work
for botanical medicines "Physician Desk Reference for Herbal
Medicine", co-editor of the "Complete German Commission
E Monographs" and Editor-in-Chief of "Advances in Natural
Therapy. He was a member of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
He is also an Executive Director of IKEC International Kava Executive
Council (NGO). He is the co-founder of a world leading consulting
company focusing on natural products.

Director and, since 1999, Adviser. His area of interest includes

and utilization; (ii) Plant biotechnology; (iii) Medicinal &
aromatic plants; (iv) Seri-biotechnology; and (v) Environmental
biotechnology; (vi) Aquaculture & marine biotechnology; (vii)

Paul Pui Hay But
Position: Professor in the Department of Biology

Prof Paul But is a professor in the Department of Biology, The
Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and in Yunnan Institute
of Materia Medica, Kunming, China. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.B.A.
from CUHK, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California,
Berkeley. He served as the Director of the Chinese Medicinal Material
Research Centre, CUHK, from 1992-99. He is now the Coordinator
of the Laboratory for Quality Control of Chinese Medicines; and
the Co-Convener of the Section for Standardization and Safety
of Chinese Medicines, Institute of Chinese Medicine, CUHK; and
Webmaster of the websites on ‘Hong Kong Flora and Vegetation

His interest focuses on the authentication, quality control, safety
and efficacy of traditional Chinese medicines and natural products.

G. N. Qazi
Position: Director

Dr. Qazi after his Post Doctoral Research in Biochemical Engineeirng
at the University of Dortmund where he worked on Bubble Column
and airlift bioreacters worked in the area of molecular biology
at Max Plank Institute of Biochemistry in Munich (Germany).
Dr. Qazi served as Chairman of Biotechnology Division for six
years and brought international recognition to the Division by
giving it a lead in fermentation technology for a large number
of commercially viable products. To name a few, the most important
fermentation processes developed by Dr. Qazi and his group are:
gluconates, biocontrol agents, plant growth promoters, novel enzymes,
kinetic resolution of chiral drugs. His work of gene cloning and
genetic manipulation is widely acclaimed and recognised internationally.
Dr. Qazi has about 85 research papers published in the national
and international journals of repute or presented in different
national and international conferences. He has also delivered
a number of invited lectures on Fermentation Technology and Genetic
Engineering both in Indian and foreign universities and institutes.
Dr, Qazi has also established a Regional Centre on Bioinformatics
at RRL, Jammu.
