Atomoxetine: Dosage & When To Take it
Atomoxetine, commonly known as Strattera, is a medication often prescribed for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It works mainly through the mechanism of inhibiting noradrenaline reuptake in the nerve synapses of the brain.
Many questions may arise in relation to the usage of Atomoxetine, for example, what is the maximum dose and can Atomoxetine can be taken at night? The following information may differ from the information provided by your physician, seeking clarification from your prescriber or pharmacist is needed for safe and effective usage.
Atomoxetine Dosage
The typical dosage of Atomoxetine varies based on factors such as body weight and age. Prior to starting Atomoxetine it is important for the prescriber to evaluate the patient's cardiovascular status, including checking the blood pressure and heart rate.
For children up to 70 kg
The typical starting dose for Atomoxetine is 0.5 mg/kg. After an initial period of at least 3-7 days, the dose may be increased to approximately 1.2 mg/kg per day. Following an additional 2 to 4 weeks, if necessary, the dose may be further increased to a daily maximum of 1.4 mg/kg or 100 mg per day.
For children weighing more than 70 kg
The usual starting dose is 40 mg once a day. After a minimum of 3-7 days, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily in the morning or as divided doses in the morning and late afternoon/early evening. After an additional 2 to 4 weeks, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg per day.
For Adults
The usual starting dose is 40 mg once a day. After a minimum of 3-7 days, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily in the morning or as divided doses in the morning and late afternoon/early evening. After an additional 2 to 4 weeks, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg per day.
When To Take It
Atomoxetine is commonly taken once a day in the morning, but there can be individual nuances to the timing of the dosage. This mainly depends on the tolerability of the medication. If you are experiencing side effects from Atomoxetine, then you should contact your responsible prescriber and ask what may be done about it.
Can You Take Atomoxetine At Night?
Yes. Your doctor may, in certain circumstances, advice you to take Atomoxetine in the evening or at night. This may especially be the case if you are experiencing daytime sleepiness from taking the medication in the morning. However, some individuals may experience difficulties falling asleep due to the noradrenergic properties of the medication if it is taken during the evening or night. Discuss any timing adjustments with your doctor prior to implementing any changes to your routine.
Can Atomoxetine Be Taken Twice a Day?
Yes. According to the prescribing information, Atomoxetine can be taken either once daily or as divided doses in the morning and evening. This may be considered if you are experiencing side effects shortly after taking the medication (e.g. sleepiness, nausea, or anxiety). Splitting the dose in half and taking it two times a day may produce less immediate side effects. Discuss any potential adjustments with your prescribing physician prior to implementing any changes.
How To Take It
Atomoxetine capsules should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water, and they can be taken with or without food. Take Atomoxetine consistently at the same time each day so that the medication maintains its effectiveness. This will also help establish a routine for remembering doses, which may be especially difficult for some individuals with ADHD.
